Klondike Solitaire Turn 1

Klondike Solitaire Turn 1 is the classic Klondike patience with especially large cards. The value and suit are clearly visible in the corner of every card, so even in long rows you can see at once what is where. The game is free and runs right in your browser, with no sign-up and no download.

Quick guide

• This is classic Solitaire, also called Klondike.
• Very large cards (you can set the size yourself). You can also play in fullscreen.
• The first move: look for the Aces in the stock or move the free cards in the columns. Build the cards down in alternating red and black (for example, a red seven on a black eight).
• If you don’t know what to do next, click “Hint” (at the top on a computer, at the bottom on phones and tablets). The game will then show you a possible move.
• Goal: all cards go to the foundations (the four empty spaces at the top), each from Ace to King.
• There are hints, undo, sound on and off, a timer and a move counter, as well as different card backs and card decks.

How to make the cards even bigger

• Fullscreen: click “Play in fullscreen”. The table then fills the whole screen.
• You can also change the size of the cards with “−” and “+” next to “Card size”, that is, make the cards smaller or bigger. On a phone, you will find this setting under “Appearance” → “Settings”.
• There are several card decks to choose from on the site. You pick one under “Appearance”.
• Also under “Appearance” you set the background of the table, the table colour, the card back and dark or light mode.

1 card or 3 cards

On a computer, you choose the variant at the top left. With “1 card”, each click on the stock turns over one card, the easy variant for relaxed games. With “3 cards”, three cards are turned over at once, and only the top one can be played. This variant is of course harder and more for experienced players.

How often can you win Klondike?

In our experience, about 75% of Klondike games with one card can be won. That means about three out of four games work out. A game takes about four and a half minutes on average.

Whether your game will work out is hard to say for sure, though. The mathematician Persi Diaconis even called this open question “one of the embarrassments of applied probability”. There are a few clues, however:

• If you could see all the cards, about 82% of games with three cards would be solvable, according to calculations.
• In one study, an experienced player won 189 of 442 games, which is about 43%.

How to play

Goal: Move all 52 cards to the four foundations at the top right, each suit on its own, from Ace to King. So each foundation starts with an Ace, then the Two, the Three and so on up to the King.

Layout: At the start you see seven piles on the table with one to seven cards. Only the top card of each pile is face up. The remaining 24 cards are in the stock at the top left.

Moves: On the table you build cards down in alternating red and black, for example a red nine on a black ten. You can also move a whole ordered sequence. When you move a card away, the face-down card it covered is turned over.

Only a King, or an ordered sequence that starts with a King, may go on an empty space in one of the 7 piles.

If you see no more moves, click the stock. You can click it as often as you like, as long as it has cards. The cards are shown again and again in the same order.

If you don’t know where to move, click the light bulb icon (“Hint”). The game will then show you where you can move now (if a move is possible at the moment).

Tips

• Turn over the cards in the long piles first, as that is where most of the face-down cards are.
• Only empty a space when a King is ready to go there.
• Don’t move low cards to the foundations too early if you still need them on the table.
• Feel free to use “Undo” often to take back the last move. This helps especially when you have to choose which card to move next.
• “Hint” shows a possible move.
• Double-clicking a card sends it straight to its foundation (if it fits the order there).
